Training via eLearning: An Alternative Certification Program

Updated: 10/16/08

  Internship

Ongoing Support

Throughout the program, the candidate receives ongoing support. From admission into the program--the Logistics Form, through exit from the program--recommendation for a certificate, candidates connect to four mentors. Guiding the candidate through the internship are the online, induction and internship mentors. The Logistics Form serves as a blueprint for the candidate's progress and assists the mentors in guiding the candidate through the teacher preparation process.  In addition, the TEACH Director, two program supervisors (logistics & clinical) and internship principal will provide constructive guidance for improvement.  The Logistics Supervisor assists/guides intern in planning, disciplining, increasing learning and delivering basic classroom techniques. The Clinical Supervisor provides treatment by actually modeling techniques missing in an intern’s classroom performance.

Candidate Competencies

Throughout the internship, candidates have the opportunity to build teaching capacity by mastering overarching competencies.

bulletRelate to the children they are teaching.
bulletKnow what to teach and why.
bulletSet high expectations for learning.
bulletExecute efficient teaching and student support strategies.
bulletDetermine impact on student learning.
bulletContinuously improve teaching based on student development and reflections on practice.

Paid Internship

While serving as a Teacher of Record during the one-year paid internship,  candidates receive salary and benefits of a first-year teacher. On average, bilingual teachers may receive as much as $38,000 per year.

Each candidate secures a teaching position through application and interview process of the Texas Education Agency accredited school district, charter school, or private school.

Unpaid Practicum

The practicum is designed for those individuals who would rather not serve as    a Teacher of Record in a school for 36-weeks.  Instead the candidate elects to participate in a 14-week unpaid classroom placement assigned by the school district. The experience is very similar to participating in a student teaching experience.  If this experience meets your needs, please email Dr. Quintanilla.

Ongoing Support After Certificate Issued

TEACH provides support long after an individual is issued a Standard Certificate. During the first two-years after certification (3-years of Program Support), the TEACH certified teacher, or masterteacher, receives supervisory support. In addition, the TEACH masterteacher receives access to the TEACH QUEST portal.  In the portal, the masterteacher may access any of the uGuide Resources available to teachers. uGuide Resources include courses on:
