Training via eLearning: An Alternative Certification Program

Program Course of Study

TEACH meets not only the critical need for teachers of culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse students in Texas, but also meets the needs of talented, potential teacher candidates who may find themselves unable to enroll in a traditionally delivered alternative certification program.

Curriculum: Preparing candidates for the high-stakes performance on the TExES and in the classroom (TEKS & TAKS), the TEACH curriculum focuses on an integrated and developmental learning process. The interdisciplinary nature of the TEACH curriculum conforms to the required state standards.  Professors weave the specific competencies of each certificate area through each course. Workshop presenters guide candidates in creating materials for the classroom aligned to the standards.

Clock Hours: Candidate receives a minimum of 360 clock hours over 44-weeks including a 36-week internship. The program is framed by three delivery systems:

bullet

A virtual classroom, 300 clock hours delivered through the Internet by epathlearning. The New Portal entrance can be found HERE Surf courses through Guest Portal below.

bullet

A physical classroom, 60 clock hours delivered through Saturday workshops.

bullet

At Norman Elementary School, Austin, Texas, from 10 am-3:30pm.

bullet

A 36-week paid internship in  a school classroom.

Brain-based Emphases: TEACH delivers the curriculum through a Suite of Courses developed by college professors and master teachers. Framed on the brain-based research, instructors connect candidates to what Katz and Rubin (1999) coined as Neurobics, the new science of brain exercise. The authors present a deliberate allusion to physical exercise. Neurobics, however, refers to exercising different brain areas rather than different muscle groups. Generally, schools tend to favor left-brain modes of thinking while downplaying the right-brain ones. TEACH proposes to shift the learning paradigm, guiding candidates through techniques using both sides of the brain, a more whole-brained orientation.

Curriculum:  The Suite of Courses contains two types of courses: core courses (ACC prefixes) and informational/enrichment courses (all other prefixes). Core courses focus on preparing students to meet the challenges of the TExES exam, the job interview, and classroom.  The Informational/enrichment courses focus on developing student confidence to successfully meet the rigors of the interview and classroom
